Lighting the City of Chicago

When the third largest city in the United States needs large-scale deployment of a lighting solution for the entire city, vetting the right company and products is key. While many companies claim robust product solutions, ability to handle time constraints and aggressive lead times for product delivery; living up to these promises can be a daunting task for most. The need for a company that can devote sufficient resources to the project while still being able to produce quality in quantities to get the job done, makes for a  ‘nice, boring, predictable’ lighting roll out.

A little over three years ago, the city of Chicago was preparing for a selective deployment of LED solutions in residential areas. The city’s requirements and stringent specifications provided a perfect opportunity for VEGA Light Control Systems.

We were awarded the project based on our superior performance and a proven track record with the City of Chicago. The decision-makers knew how important reliability would be for such a large job, and we were thrilled to be assigned the task for many reasons, not the least of which being the opportunity to continue our success in providing robust, reliable lighting products on a major scale.

In fulfilling the city’s plan to retrofit all decorative street lighting,  with additional units in the Greater Chicagoland area,  the city engineering team understood the rigorous testing involved in our products and processes, to produce high quality light distribution. We pride ourselves on a superior design and performance, verifying through multiple testing procedures, that the product being delivered functions above our customer’s required standards.

To date, 15,000 units have been installed across the City of Chicago with 0.03% failures. In total, covering the Greater Chicagoland area, more than 20,000 units are in use, with fewer than five failures in the entire population.

Is Brighter Always Better?

We’ve all been there. We’ve caught glimpses, or even stared, at an extremely bright light source. We see spots. “Wow,” we tell ourselves, “that is so bright, it must be exactly what I need for my project.”

We need to be careful, though: brightness can fool us. Brightness can actually undermine our vision and our ability to see around an area. When we look at something exceptionally bright, our pupils constrict and we lose visual acuity, which is the same thing that happens with a high glare light source. The true test of whether a particular light is right for your application isn’t to look at the light; it’s to look at what it’s lighting.

The Flashlight Test

Imagine yourself in the dark with a flashlight. Shine it directly in your face, and you can’t see anything. Worse, when you turn the light away from your face, your eyes need time to adjust in an effort to figure out what’s going on. Now, imagine, instead of shining the light in your face, you shine it at the ground, the walls, or whatever is around you. Now, you can see your surroundings.

You can conduct a similar test driving at night. We’ve all see the ultra bright high glare headlights out recently. An oncoming car with it’s high glare lights does not improve your vision (even though they are putting a lot of light on the ground). That stray light from their lights is hitting your eyes and reducing your vision. Once they pass your vision of the road actually improves because the source of the glare is gone. You can see better with less light and without that second set of headlights pointing in your direction.

This is the same mindset you should have when deciding a lighting strategy for your parking lot or outdoor application. It’s less about the way the actual light looks, and far more about what the light is illuminating, and how well you can see in that environment.

Coverage Over Brightness

While a bright light source can be attractive, we care more about the area its lighting being bright. That is, if we focus on coverage by engineering the optics and how they manage and deliver the light, we can deliver the desired results without necessarily needing the brightest lights available.

We emphasize low-glare, high-performance products and strategies that use precise light control to give you light where you need it, while also helping you meet lighting standards and uniformity requirements. This creates a pleasing, welcoming environment, which is exactly what quality lighting should do.

ADA Bible Church

Lighting Ada Bible Church

What’s the old saying? If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again? Unfortunately, Ada Bible Church had to live that cliché literally when they decided to upgrade the lighting in their parking lot.

It’s hard to describe what the parking lot looked like before. It was almost like what a cloudy day looks like at dusk; very difficult to see anything. For obvious safety reasons, they needed to re-illuminate the parking lot.

At first, Ada Bible Church hired one of our competitors to install LED screw-in products throughout the lot. Unfortunately, the high failure rate and very poor light performance was unusable and no better than before. The whole job needed to be redone.

On the second try, Ada Bible hired another one of our competitors and got the exact same results: bad light performance.

As the frustration mounted, giving up wasn’t an option as they needed to give their parishioners and visitors a safe environment at night and early in the morning. That’s when Ada Bible Church contacted Vega Light Control Systems for the first time.

After looking at the property and assessing the situation, we proposed our S7 Shoebox LED Retrofit, which was specifically designed for shoebox and parking-lot applications.

“Our installer commented the Retrofit kits installed quickly and easily,”
says Gayle Churches, facilities supervisor for Ada Bible Church.

The ease of installation is important, and results are undeniable. Take a look at our before and after footage to see the type of superior performance we can achieve thanks to our focus on quality engineering.

“It was a wonderful experience working with Vega Light Control Systems,” says Churches. “From determining our lighting needs through the project’s completion, they provided a high quality product and service.”

Photo Specs
Accurate details really matter to us, so when shooting the footage for the before and after we made sure they were both shot on clear nights, the same moon-phase, and the same hour after sunset.

All the photos have the same exposure settings in order to show an accurate difference in light levels:

  • The parking lot (the actual ground/cement) was a 4 second exposure for both before & after
  • The sky was 30 seconds for both photos (with lights off)
  • The light fixtures themselves were a 1/8th second exposure for both before and after

The parking lot cement also had the same white balance settings for both photos, which shows the new lighting has a warmer color temperature than the old lighting, which was darker and more blue.
